This week we have to discuss within our groups and write a collective artist statement for models of Space and Materiality and Integrative Studio. As we discussed in our last class how to write an artist statement, we followed the process and came up with these two
Integrative Studio: ‘Colors of Dadar Flower Market’
The Dadar Flower Market or Phool Gali is one of the oldest and busiest markets of Mumbai and one of the most mesmerizing hidden gems of the city. The model is a pyramid-shaped structure made from wire and wool. The base was made using file card and cotton to create texture. It represents touch. The pyramid of wire and wool represents the sweet and soft perfume that lingers through every inch of the market. The top is a sand-encrusted file card triangle that represents the strong and shrill and sharp sounds of the vendors yelling and the buzz of the market. The sweet aroma or taste of the market is shown with the use of candy wrappers. Sound, Smell and Touch are the predominant senses whereas taste is complementary to smell. The inspiration for this model comes from the market, minor details from the place that spoke to us.
Space and Materiality: ‘Dolechagi’
Dinosaurs existed a long time ago on this planet and us as kids were always fascinated with them and especially their lifestyle it was so different than what we have, they use to stay in the woods and hunt and eat. T-rex is one of the strongest dinosaurs that ever existed and hence it was ideal for inspiration in making a model to show strength and valor. Taekwondo, on the other hand, is a sport that depends on kicking and blocking and like at-rex taekwondo player doesn’t have much use of their hands, and so the second inspiration was Taekwondo. To show the interface of kick and block, we made a kick assister and a shield. The project is made of wood because it’s a powerful and rapid action, so we took wood because it is hard and provides the proper strength to the model to decrease the chance of wear and tear while performing the action. We smoothen the edges for its easy movement. We used screws for rigid connections. The shield is in the shape of the footprint of the ‘T-rex.’ The strength of the kick assister is influenced by the structure of the leg of ‘T-rex.’ And as the movement is from a taekwondo action we name the project dolechagi that is the name of the kick in Korean, where doleo means side and chagi means kick therefore sidekick, as it is also a sidekick of the person who wants to learn to kick and to block.
